Scan-a-rama Kickstarter Campaign by FG Creative Director Fred Kahl

– by Doris Tsang

Funny Garbage Creative Director Fred Kahl (A.K.A “The Great Fredini”) is obsessed with 3D printing. After mastering the art of 3D modeling and printing, he is taking on an extensive art project to create a miniature model of Luna Park, the premier turn of the century amusement destination in Coney Island.

At Danbury Maker Faire

The project entails the use of Printrbot, Makerbot Replicator 1 and “Scan-o-tron 3000”, a custom-designed scanning station powered by custom-made turntable, Kinect, and ReconstructMe portrait software. Fred is modeling and printing all of the historical Beaux Arts buildings, and to fill the park with visitors, he is adding 3D portraits of friends, family, Coney Island visitors and the crew who work in the modern day amusement district.

This project actually reminds us of our mission - to expose technology to the community and to inspire more new creations. The team at Funny Garbage is supporting Fred in this project, and is contributing the use of our Maker Space to print all of the amazing models.

In addition, Fred has launched a Kickstarter Campaign to support the creation of Luna Park. Participants in the campaign can sign up to be scanned, to receive a full 3D model of themselves or their family, or to even have Fred come to their home/office to scan an entire party of their friends and clients.

To get scanned, stop by Coney Island on Saturdays this summer, or the Funny Garbage office to check in on the progress. We can’t wait to see this model in real life next summer at Coney Island!
